The power of resilience and the importance of mental health support are at the heart of an inspiring cross-country journey undertaken by a father and son duo. Andrew Turnbull and his son, Judah, are cycling from Victoria, British Columbia, to St. John's, Newfoundland, with a mission to raise funds and awareness for nurses' mental health. Their journey, aptly named "Ride for Resilience," is a testament to the enduring spirit of both the riders and the cause they champion.
A Personal Journey with a Universal Message
The inspiration for this remarkable endeavor stems from Andrew's mother, Debby Turnbull, a former nurse who faced a series of challenges that led to her own mental health struggles. Her journey, marked by injury, loss, and a battle with cancer, has left an indelible mark on the family. However, it is the resilience and determination to support others that have become the driving force behind this cross-country adventure.
"One of the nurses serving both my mum and this other patient came in, and she got talking with the women. And she said, well, 'once a nurse, always a nurse.' I realized my mum still is a nurse, and she sees herself that way." Andrew shared, highlighting the enduring identity and dedication of nurses.
Cycling for a Cause
Andrew and Judah embarked on their journey on May 8, 2023, with a goal of raising $15,000 for the Canadian Nursing Foundation's Healing Healthcare Initiative. As of June 10, they had already surpassed $14,000, a testament to the support and awareness their mission has garnered. The funds will go towards supporting grassroots initiatives that focus on raising awareness and providing training around nurses' mental health, an often-overlooked aspect of healthcare.
"The Canadian Nurses Foundation recognizes that our healthcare system has its flaws, and one of those is the lack of care for nurses struggling with their mental health. We want to change that narrative," Andrew explained.
The Challenges of the Road
The physical challenges of cycling across Canada are immense, with weather and terrain playing a significant role. Andrew and Judah chose to travel from west to east, hoping to benefit from prevailing winds, but as Andrew humorously noted, "the wind had other plans." The Prairies, in particular, presented a relentless battle against strong crosswinds, making the journey tougher than expected.
"Enduring the elements and adapting to the terrain has been a character-building experience," Judah shared. "It's a testament to the resilience we're advocating for."
A Different Approach to Self-Care
Andrew's perspective on mental health and self-care is a refreshing take on an often-stigmatized topic. He believes that while compassion for others is a noble trait, recognizing when that compassion becomes a burden is crucial. "It's not a sign of weakness to acknowledge that you need support. We all have our strengths and weaknesses, and it's in those moments of vulnerability that true resilience is built," he added.
A Journey's End, A New Beginning
As Andrew and Judah continue their journey, their goal of reaching St. John's in July remains, but it is secondary to the well-being of Debby. The ride could end sooner if her cancer condition requires their presence. However, the impact of their journey will continue long after they hang up their bikes. The funds raised and the awareness generated will leave a lasting legacy, ensuring that nurses receive the support they deserve.
"This ride is about more than just the destination. It's about the journey, the connections made, and the impact we can have on the lives of those who dedicate their lives to caring for others." Andrew concluded.
